Safety of the superyachts
In the past dealing with a fax machine connected to an Inmarsat terminal in the owners on board office was a routine task for the Captain. But today also the highly skilled and trained ETO/IT Officers are at times overwhelmed due to the current development in the IT.
The yacht owners need 24/7 connection to both on-board and shore based applications and services. The maintenance of the systems is usually remotely being done. Therefore is the safety of the most critical and vulnerable systems on the ship exceptionally compromised.
The possibility that unauthorized individuals or organizations will infiltrate home and office AV systems and misappropriate and remotely control tablets and smart TVs to record audio and video, using device integrated microphones and cameras to spy on people represents a great danger, because the owners of the yachts belong to the wealthiest industrials and are therefore in the focus of intelligence agencies and criminals.
Also the technicians, who are accessing the system for remote support, may intentionally or unintentionally become a danger. An incorrect command or incorrect implemented update may bring the IT infrastructure on yacht to standstill and the Troubleshooting may take hours or days. Another consideration is that vast sums are often charged for these remote support sessions and the work hours can only then be disputed when an ETO present is and monitors the process. The ETOs seldom have the time to do this.
So how do we ensure that the systems are secure and evidence who did what, when and where?
Here helps VISULOX-RACAM (Remote Access Control and Monitoring). The system is based on a 19 ” rack-mounted LINUX server (physical or virtual) which is connected to the vessel. Through the software, the captain can decide who gets access to the system and monitor the operations.
VISULOX has been running for over 10 years successfully in industry. The experience has shown that the companies which implement VISULOX have less downtime and the documentation from errors led to a more responsible approach of employees. The technicians spend less time troubleshooting and because they know that their work is recorded, they work concentrated. Service providers send more qualified staff to solve the tasks quickly and competently.
VISULOX-RECAM was developed specifically for the needs of yachts and provides, among other things:
- Secure and reliable access, on low bandwidth and high latency connections
- Role-based login handling with two-factor authentication
- Role-based application assignment of any kind of application or IP service on the vessel
(Windows, LINUX, router, switches, http/https based service, SSH, Telnet, VNC,X11)
- Video recording of users interaction sessions
- Access notification and reporting
- File transfer control
