How employees become culprits
Companies protect themselves with technical measures against threats from the outside. But the most common attacks come from inside or are supported by the inside.
But how becomes an employee a culprit?
On the one hand it can happen due to disappointment, frustration or anger at work or due to private problems, on the other hand it can happen because of the lack of training on the product, lack of knowledge about work processes or use of removable media.
Particularly vulnerable are people who are socially not consolidated and are exposed to additional stress factors. These may be private, like financial difficulties, illness or neglect or professionally, such as anger with the supervisor, the threat of dismissal or unfulfilled expectations.
If these factors come together, values can be discarded and obvious anger may be felt as a provocation which should actually be fought back.
These internal perpetrators use then their access rights to download data themselves or provide external offenders a possibility of an access.
It is important to establish clear rules of conduct within the company – even when dealing with colleagues and managers themselves. Compliance guidelines have to be recorded in writing and made accessible to all employees. Technical IT security should include next to monitoring the recording of activities in critical areas. Knowing that the activities are recorded is a good protection against abuse already.
